Vappu & May 1st 2023

Havis Amanda is now temporarily closed in Helsinki and is undergoing renovations to preserve her for the future. City officials are unsure whether or not people will be allowed close to the statue again after the work is carried out to reinforce her.

The statue, which is usually found by the market square in Helsinki is a favourite for celebrating Finns, be they sports fans or students, the statue which first appeared in 1908 has been a centre piece.

I documented the last 'Mantan lakitus' (capping of Manta) a celebration where students place a student cap on her head during an elaborate ceremony. The following party often goes on all night, with police escorting droves of people out of the parks, for them to return in the early morning tents in tow for May 1st picnics, bands/singing, speeches and marches.

Her future is still uncertain.
